Expired sunscreen is a medical product that should be disposed of properly via the RUM (Returned Unwanted Medicines) program 🙌
This program allows you to drop off any expired or unwanted medication (whether prescription or over-the-counter), at a pharmacy for safe disposal 🩺💊
By doing so, you can prevent harmful chemicals from entering your home and the environment, including waterways.
When it comes to EMPTY containers:
♻️ Empty bottles can go in the recycling bin
🗑️ Empty tubes go in the waste to landfill bin
WHY?
Sunscreen is regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia. It
typically has a lifespan of two to three years. The packaging is required to have an expiry or use-by date to make it easier for consumers to keep track. However, to keep it effective, sunscreen must be stored below 30°C and away from direct sunlight or other heat sources, regardless of the expiry date ☀️🌡️
