Being selfless, is a form of manipulation. It is saying, you will all owe me, and in return, I will not take, as to be indebted to anyone.
Many traumas will cause this, but once you learn, it's a trap, even if you don't like to, accept small favors from others. Plus, you're allowing that same feel good feeling of helping others, to be given, to another. They need to feel that, too, don't be knowingly selfish, now that you know, as I eat my own humble pie, and hey, it's got a good flavor.
