What is ion suppression?

Ion suppression is a phenomenon that can occur during liquid chromatography (LC) or mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. It is caused by the presence of ions in the mobile phase that compete with the analyte ions for the sites on the column packing material or for the entrance to the MS ion source. This can result in a decrease in the signal for the analyte ions and/or an increase in the signal for the interfering ions.

There are a number of ways to reduce or eliminate ion suppression. One is to use a different column packing material that is less susceptible to ion suppression. Another is to use a mobile phase that does not contain the ions that are causing the problem. Finally, the MS instrument can be tuned to reduce or eliminate the ion suppression.
