A son shall honor his father. If I am a father, where is my honor?" says the LORD.
Malachi 1:6
Praise be to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.
2 Corinthians 1:3
The biblical passages are about the fatherhood of God. He is the Father of Jesus Christ. That is why Jesus also embodies the characteristics of God, namely mercy and comfort. The way Jesus treated people is the way God treats us. This is a great help in understanding what He is really like. I always stick to the words of Jesus, who said: “He who sees me sees the Father.”
Now we Christians can also call God our Father. This refers to real fatherhood, not just a form of address. But what does this mean for our lives? First of all, it means that we are given a new identity. Jesus Christ once said: “Nor should you call anyone here on earth ‘Father’, for only one is your Father, the Father in heaven.”(2) That sounds a bit strange. Should we no longer call our biological father “father” or “dad”? In my opinion, Jesus was referring to the fact that the scribes and Pharisees liked to be addressed as “Master” or “Father”. Basically, however, it is about our new identity. Jesus makes us aware that we have been given a divine nature in Christ.(3) But if we know who we are, we usually also know how we should act in many everyday situations. Our Father in heaven is merciful and full of comfort - so are we, because we are his children.
