So, there is more: I theorize that the Adrenalin pathways represent a behavioral sink that is susceptible to conditioning and reinforcement feedback. That means there is something I'll call: "Acquired Adrenaline Addiction". It is reinforced behaviors that trigger Adrenalin secretion. At the extreme end, it results in something called Addison's disease, or Adrenal insufficiency. People suffering from Addison's Disease will display symptoms like fatigue, low blood pressure, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, skin pigmentation darkening. It cannot be cured - only managed. That explains Adrenochrome as a supplemental source of Adrenalin to manage Addison's disease caused by AAA.
The things that cause the largest amount of Adrenalin to be secreted are fear, anger, pain and sex. In an abstract sense, Adrenalin is the existential gate keeper molecule. The acts most closely tied to life and death trigger Adrenalin. The spiritual aspect would be tied to this. In AI, the 'hard' problem is the mind/brain duality. In humans, this duality where the mind and brain merge and separate is linked to Adrenalin. It looks to me like the Cabal has been focusing considerable effort on studying that barrier - including esoteric, psychological and spiritual research.
The Cabal may be bloodlines which may have started as an 'innocent' mutation that left their member's with low adrenal function. The members would have suffered the Addison effects until they discovered various cures. The simplest of them would have pulled them into excessive behaviors of anger, fear, pain and sex in an attempt to offset the low Adrenalin by stimulating more release. This would have eventually failed and deepened the severity of the Addison's disease. At some point they discovered the consumption of Adrenalin via blood had a positive effect. The sources, invariably would be facing existential Adrenalin release and would coincidentally be a good supply. I would think much history would have to pass until people began to understand medicine and human physiology enough to advance further. They evidently learned of the source and began also harvesting it directly from the glands in the brain. You can see how the drives interact with instinct to form stable, repeating, behaviors.
WARNING:
The Cabal may never have had a genetic predisposition for Adrenalin insufficiency. Chronic Adrenal secretion at a high rates is a direct cause of Addison's disease by itself. The glands just deteriorate under extreme function. That means Acquired Adrenal Addiction can be conditioned or caused by behaviors alone. Habitual Fear, chronic anger, masochism, sexual addiction - including masturbation, all move a person forward in the AAA process. You should make an attempt to be actively aware of habits that are moving you personally forward in this process. You have been warned.

I have done some work on a "Drake-like" equation and the implications are shocking.
Life needs energy. That is perhaps its single most essential requirement. Using our solar system I took a look at energy available to life. I was surprised to discover that the sun only provides 17% of that energy while the friction and nuclear processes of planet cores provided 83%. Only the 1st 4 planet get a noticeable amount of energy from the sun. After Mars, the planet core energy dwarfs it. Jupiter could be flung into the deep void and it would barely notice. It would continue with its extremely hot core for BILLIONS of years.
That means life uses star radiation only when convenient. If it is there, life will use it, if not it uses its NORMAL and PRIMARY energy source - planet cores. This completely inverts the common, uninspected assumption that life is a surface phenomena. Most life in the universe is sub-surface*. Surface life is a fleeting and remote second. It isn't even close.
Surface life is subject to continuous disruptions to its environment. Cataclysms. Subsurface life is hugely insulated from almost every category of disruption. Life that has the capability to live below the surface has a huge and permanent survival advantage over surface bound life. The primary categorization feature is where it ultimately derives its energy from - the star or the core.
The metallicity of a star refers to the proportion of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. These heavier elements are forged through successive generations of stellar evolution, as stars form, fuse lighter elements into heavier ones, and then disperse them through supernovae and stellar winds. Matallicity has a strong correlation to the amount of time that matter has been subject to evolution.
Life arrives in forming systems along with elements like a super-heavy element. The void transit filters for subsurface, or core adapted life.
TLDR: star systems tend to form pre-stocked with life that prefers to derive its energy from planetary cores.

Earth is a frozen planet with occasional warm periods like the one we are in now. In the last 1M years 10 ice ages have covered it 50%-80% of the time. Flooding accompanies the end of an ice age. The surface is repeatedly reset every 10k-30k years. Milankovitch cycles and precession are a stable driver of this, but meteors, volcanoes and ocean currents also cause them irregularly but reliably.
Not much survives these resets on the surface. Culture is washed away as is most macro-scale life. However, subsurface life fares better. Ocean ecosystems are forced to restructure away from Sun-dependent food to Earth-dependent food like thermal vent microbes. Sharks are a nice indicator with many species unchanged for millions of years. This apex predator continuation across surface resets puts an upper bound on how deeply disrupted the ocean ecosystem can be. Oceans are not the only subsurface environment shielded from cataclysm.
