New payment service wants to replace debit card with face scan
The American software company PopID has developed a payment service that aims to replace debit card payments with a face scan. Users only need to hold their face in front of the face scanner to pay. Further identification is not required. PopID's payment service is now being used by seventy restaurants and cafes in a handful of American cities, according to the BBC.
According to PopID director John Miller, there is no difference between paying by face scan or phone. "It's just a different way of identifying yourself," he notes. Those wishing to pay via the payment service must first register via PopID's website. After a photo is taken, money must be added to the Pop Pay account. After that, users can pay at the relevant restaurants and cafes via their faces.
The photos that the facial scanner takes of customers at the eating and drinking establishments are immediately destroyed and the data is not shared with anyone, Miller said. The executive has bigger plans for facial authentication, namely for everything from opening the front door to age verification to signing up for the gym. "You can imagine all sorts of things that are possible when you have a large database of faces that people trust," Miller says to the LA Times.
However, there are also privacy concerns. For example, PopID may share personal data with locations where the user has paid through the service. And when users don't explicitly ask for their data to be deleted, the data remains for three years after the last use, reports VentureBeat. There is also uncertainty about the algorithm used for facial identification, reveals AI researcher Mike Cook of Queen Mary University of London.
