Recharge your batteries in your life of faith
"Keep yourselves in the love of God." (Jude 21)
The fuel gauge lights up as you turn the car key. You have been driving on reserve for some time. The fuel gauge only rises slightly. "Never mind. It'll be fine. I can still manage the short distance. It's only 10 km."
Off we go. The first few kilometers go well. But suddenly the car starts to stutter. "This could go wrong," you think, "Oh no! Now there's a slight climb. Pull over quickly." But too late. The engine stops while you're still pressing down on the gas pedal. You come to a halt in the middle of the junction. Dry-running ...
You may be familiar with dry-running. You've run out of gas. We've experienced that spiritually too. You simply have no more power, no more zeal for the Lord and the gospel. You may still have stepped on the gas, but the tank was already empty. That can happen, but it doesn't have to. We can prevent it.
Jude writes in his letter in verse 21: "Keep yourselves in the love of God." This makes it clear that we are responsible for our spiritual condition: Keep yourselves! We are not to lay our hands in our laps, but do something for our spiritual condition. We should prevent ourselves from running dry inside.
And with this exhortation, Jude also puts the key in our hands by drawing our attention to how we are to maintain ourselves: in the love of God! The love of God prevents us from running dry. It fills the tank.
