Medusa was not always a monster with a look that "stoned" you, but a victim of Poseidon, who chased her and raped her in the temple of Athena.
Athena refused to punish Poseidon for his attack and instead accuses and punishes Medusa for a crime she was the victim of.
Medusa was eventually chased and killed by Perseus. This sculpture in which Medusa holds the head of Perseus.
Reversing the myth and resisting the guilt of rape victims through a timeless myth is good news. The work of high symbolic significance is reminiscent of injustice and the distortion of reality through patriarchal social structures.
