Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, in 2015, with Sam Altman and Elon Musk serving as the initial board members. Microsoft provided OpenAI LP with a $1 billion investment in 2019 and a $10 billion investment in 2023. Musk has had a famously hot-and-cold relationship with artificial intelligence. In March 2023, he added his name to a call for a six-month pause on some AI development, and less than six months later, he officially launched xAI, an AI company that aims to "understand the true nature of the universe". Musk has also predicted that superintelligence, or AI that is smarter than humans, will arrive in five or six years
