Came to vent tonight. I’m a building substitute teacher working on my Masters in Special Education. I love my urban neighborhood school and it’s because of 1/2 of the teachers who share the same values I do as a believer I stick around hoping one of the other half will retire and I would move right in to a job. We are the best kept secret in the district and is where my girls attended...
Today something happened that just is still tarring me up. A second grader, (a new student, I know most of the kids in our school after two years ?) sat during the pledge. I asked him to stand he said, “my mom said not to.”
I didn’t know how to respond. I felt my face flush and began to utter my lecture on how freedom gave he and his mom the opportunity to sit and...instead with divine grace I uttered “ok.” I myself stood taller today spoke those words with more boldness than I have in a long time. I remember just months ago the day my brother and sis n laws two adopted children who stood with smiles on their face proud that they could pledge alligence to the American Flag.
I hurt for those who don’t understand how lucky they are to have been born into a country so free, they may sit in protest because mom told them to.
I’ve seen poverty in the US, but outside of home ??I have seen an entire region of a country where children are turned away from school because they don’t have money to buy a uniform or supplies who are hungry to learn, who sit on rocks, instead of chairs and walk several miles just to get a tiny bit of what our kids take for granted...,.well needless to say, I’ve been struggling today. I needed a little more patience and grace. For our children, Keep America Great so ALL of them will have a chance to know how great it really is! And sorry for the wicked long post?
